HMG Attends SHINE 09

HMG Attends SHINE 09

Hai Media Group’s Lisa Devaney attended SHINE 09, a two-day business “unconference” for social entrepreneurs. The event included one-to-one mentoring sessions, social collaboration games, creative brainstorming to foster new ideas, and guidance to help execute new projects.

Funding was won for a new project by Martin Sherrard, for his Stratford Walled Kitchen Garden concept, offering horticultural training and a community restaurant serving produce grown in the garden. He pitched his concept for the prize, along with Re-Made in Brixton, Open Free Cycle and Youandiskills.com.

Participating in Dave Wilcox’s social collaboration game, Devaney, along with others, conceived the concept of “Re-Think!” a community programme for troubled youths caught in the criminal justice system that would see them be taught new 21st century skills by learning how to re-furbish old computers from discarded consumer electronics. While Re-Think! didn’t win the game, due to a request for more funding than was on offer, the process brought together a mix of ideas and agendas and created something productive.

This summer brings the debut of 2gether08, a new festival for London sponsored by Channel 4 and hosted by PolicyUnplugged from 2-3 July 2008. On the agenda is a vision of applying innovative digital technologies (internet, mobile, games, and more) and imagination to promote:

  • social progress,
  • enhance the quality of public life and our collective well-being, and
  • to tackle the problems facing the world at the outset of the 21st century.

The first 2gether Festival will gather 300 innovators from a wide range of fields to focus on how using digital technologies we can generate real social benefits. At its heart is a DIY spirit where workshops and panel discussions will be shaped by participants, and action items for change will be determined throughout the gathering as discussions emerge.

HMG has teamed up with media partner Isabella Hu, of Ecolocate, a design consultancy, to develop the seed idea for an integrated promotional campaign to support Littlewoods, a popular online shopping site for fashion and housewares. We’ve presented the judges with our Rare Fruits concept, that invites customers to pick rare fashion fruits of popular brands from the branches of trees growing on islands. The virtual world concept wraps around what we’ve already been told about Littlewoods new branding initiatives to build excitement with a television commercial involving a desert island, scheduled to be aired in the 2008 holiday season.

Among our mentors for this experience will be 4talent (an innovation arm of the broadcaster Channel 4), Aegis Media, Just-b (the hosts of bTWEEN08) and Littlewoods.

We join other finalists to develop our seed ideas into a full proposal for the client, during a conference workshop, and find out Friday, 20th June 2008, if our Rare Fruits campaign is a winner. We are thrilled to be joining our digital creative peers for bTWEEN08, and hope we have a good chance at winning the cash prize of £5K.
